New Zealand Domestic Teams Warm Up for National Sevens in QueenstownTwelve of New Zealand's premier Sevens' teams have warmed up for the National Sevens in Queenstown this weekend by taking part in the Mt Maunganui Sevens tournament. Hosts Bay of Plenty won their first home title, beating Counties Manukau 35-23 in a high octane match that saw the lead changes hands no less than four times. The tournament featured all of the major unions, with the exception of reigning national champions North Harbour. Counties impressed on the day, showing all of the class that had enabled them to reach the final of the national final last year (losing 29-26 to Harbour). Counties beat Niue and Hawke’s Bay, before beating Auckland 35-12. They then came up against Hawke’s Bay again in the semi finals, triumphing 40-12, before losing the final to a good Steamers side. This coming weekend the two finalists from this tournament will clash in Pool B. National champions North Harbour will play against Auckland, Otago and Buller in Pool A.
