Kawarau Falls Bridge Route “Nationally Significant”A new double-lane bridge at Kawarau Falls could be fasttracked by a state highway classification proposal and extra traffic brought on by Queenstown's Hilton Hotel opening, according to the Queenstown Lakes District Council infrastructure services manager. Mark Kunath told the Southland Times that the council's Infrastructure Services Committee will be asked to consider the status of Queenstown as the jewel in the crown of New Zealand tourism, as is Milford Sound, and that the road between them should be considered a nationally significant route. Our view is that a one lane bridge is not appropriate,” he said. The security of access to Kelvin Heights and Jacks Point also needed to be considered, he added. Increased traffic generated by the Hilton Hotel, which is scheduled to open before ski season, coupled with heavy use of the bridge to access The Remarkables skifield would also help the cause. |
