Queenstown's fishing season opensPosted by Willy Hunt Queenstown's fishing season opens Summer's almost here and keen anglers from near and far are heading for lakes and rivers around Queenstown. The Wakatipu fishing season kicked off with high country rivers opening on 1 November. Local guides are out checking the conditions, testing tackle and gearing up for visiting anglers. Early reports are sporting. What a great way to enjoy our spectacular alpine landscape of lakes, rivers and mountains. There's a fishing adventure for everyone here, from the fly fishing enthusiast looking for wily trout in remote mountain river pools - to first timers content to cruise Lake Wakatipu and her river mouths, trawling for salmon and soaking up the scenery. The official fishing season is from 1 October (some local rivers open 1 November) until 31 May but you can spin or troll the lakes at any time of year.
