The REAL New Zealand FestivalThere are now less than five months to go until Rugby World Cup 2011 kicks off, backed by the biggest celebration this country has ever staged – the REAL New Zealand Festival. One of the key initiatives developed by the NZ 2011 Office to tap into the once-in-a-lifetime opportunity New Zealand has as Rugby World Cup host, the REAL New Zealand Festival will offer more than 1,000 events and experiences. They span the length and breadth of the country and showcase our arts, food and wine, cultures, heritage, entertainment, industries and business, experiences and lifestyle. It is the first time a Rugby World Cup host nation has staged a nationwide festival alongside the Tournament. Throughout September and October, New Zealand will be on show – giving the 85,000-plus international visitors and thousands of Kiwis reasons to take the long way round and experience a bit more of the country as they follow their favourite teams. Already there are more than 450 events on the REAL New Zealand Festival website and more are being added every day. They include tiny towns hosting community rugby games and market days; major outdoor New Zealand music concerts; fashion shows and horticultural displays; wine and food festivals, farmers' markets and even tree plantings with Living Legends including Sir Colin ‘Pine Tree' Meads. The Christchurch quake had a major affect on Rugby World Cup 2011 plans and saw seven scheduled matches moved out of the Canterbury region.
