The Queenstown CyclewayThursday, 19 August, 2010 - 11:24 Wellington, Aug 19 NZPA - The Queenstown cycleway will get a $1.83 million boost in government funding for 87km of new and existing trails. The agreement for the cycleway, to be co-funded by the Wakatipu Trails Trust and Queenstown Lakes District Council, will be signed today in Queenstown. New Zealand Cycle Trail programme manager John Dunn said the Queenstown trails would attract tourists because of the mountain scenery and existing attractions. "Equally as important will be the ability of locals to use the trails recreationally and to commute to and from work." There will be a variety of trails for cyclists to choose from and options to stay in Queenstown, Arrowtown and Gibbston, he said. The idea of establishing a national cycle trail was hatched at last year's Job Summit and Prime Minister John Key, who is also minister for tourism, has taken a personal interest in advancing it.
